Phil Writes the Saturday Morning Brew: WB Clerics in Modern

I want to try to start putting out a deck, at least, one Saturday a month that is either a new deck all together or my own take on an existing deck. These decks are probably not tested, and I do not promised you will win any tournaments with them. I just like coming up with decklists I think are fun or interesting.

This time, I wanted to explore one of my favorite Pauper decks geared up for Modern play, Clerics! I need to do some work on this deck, and any advice would be great.

Here is the decklist so far:

Creatures:
Apothecary Initiate: Using extra mana to turn spells into life is great. It goes along with this whole theme. I'm not sure how many of this creature is correct to have. In theory, extra mana should be used on Syndic of Tithes, but I guess having a backup is good.

Leonin Arbiter: Preventing opponents from searching their decks is super important in Modern. I've always liked this little guy and try to sneak him into every deck I make.

Blightspeaker: Being able to tap to make your opponent lose 1 life is fine. This creature is good for the search for a Rebel ability. Searching up D'Avenant Healer is what this guy is meant to do.

Suture Priest: Combing this creature with Syndic of Tithes and/or Apothecary Initiate is pretty fun. There can be a lot of life to be gained.

Syndic of Tithes: The Extort ability on this creature is the reason he is in the deck. This ability combos well with other abilities in the deck to make for some interesting situations. I like this creature a lot.

Drana's Emissary: A three casting 2/2 with flying is fine, but the kicker is in her ability. At the beginning of your upkeep, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life. That goes right with the theme of this deck. I am super excited about this card..

D'Avenant Healer: This lady is not the best creature, but she can be searched up by Blightspeaker. Her ability to deal 1 damage to an attacker or blocker might make for some awkward combat steps for opponents.

Fiend Hunter: This guy is great for getting rid of pesky creatures that are in the way or otherwise causing problems.

Shambling Vent: Finally, a BW manland. Besides the fact that manlands are pretty good in most deck, at least in my opinion, the Lifelink helps the theme, as well.

Thank you,
Philip
