Modern Brews: Mono Red Blitz

In Modern, I have been struggling to find a deck I liked to play. I started out on the UW Gifts Tron list that Gerry Thompson talked about infinite years agos. Since then, I have gone from deck to deck trying to find anything that I liked to play. I feel pretty bummed that the last deck that I stopped playing before Khans came out is now the new hotness in UR Delver. The blue cards never really fit my style. Leaving mana open for counter spells did not seem natural to me. I just want to attack.

Once again, I am on a guest to find a deck that I enjoy playing in Modern. This time, I want to go back to the last deck that I really really enjoyed playing in Standard, Mono Red Blitz. The goal was to play creatures and attack with them. People seem to think that these types of decks are easy to play and do not require a lot of skill, but the deck has more play to it then meets the eye.

Back in Scars-Innistrad Standard, I put together a deck I called Mono Red Blitz that I really enjoyed playing. Not only was it the first time in a while that I was winning more than 50% of my games, I actually was having a lot of fun. I looked forward to playing more and more games with the deck because I just liked how it played. I tried to make the deck work throughout the rotations that followed, but it did not feel the same. Also, school started getting harder, go figure that higher numbered classes are harder than lower ones, so I did not play anywhere near as often. My fight officially ended when Theros was released.

Right now, I do not play on buying cards to help me with this deck. Goblin Rabblemaster would be an ideal addition, but that price tag will make me wait for a little while before I pick up a couple for this deck. The numbers are probably wrong, but it is still a work in progress. I should, in theory, enjoy playing it though.

Land: 17
1x Arid Mesa
1x Bloodstained Mire
15x Mountain

Creatures: 27
4x Rakdos Cackler
4x Stromkirk Noble
3x Legion Loyalist
2x Reckless Waif
4x Burning-Tree Emissary
4x Lightning Mauler
4x Borderland Marauder
2x Pyreheart Wolf

Spells: 16
4x Lightning Bolt
4x Lava Spike
4x Madcap Skills
4x Rubblebelt Maaka

Sideboard: 15
2x Dragon Mantle
1x Blood Moon
1x Electrickery
1x Mogis's Warhound
2x Reckless Waif
4x Curse of the Pierced Heart
4x Hammerhand

Some of the cards might be a little confusing.

I like Stromkirk Noble because he grows. Nobody wants to have to kill a 1 mana 1/1, but once he starts to get bigger, they might want to get rid of him after he has already done his job.

Reckless Waif has always been a favorite card of mine. When she gets flipped against control deck, she can really start to mess with the opponent's head. Way too many have tried to play her flips to their advantage while really just destroying their goal. It could be that I was just playing against bad players too, though.

Burning-Tree Emissary into Lightning Mauler is one of my favorite things to do. They can really start to bring the damage. With a turn 1 Legion Loyalist, you are already at Battalion triggering.

The sideboard is a mess. If you can think of anything that would be better, please let me know. I remember loving Curse of the Pierced Heart so I want to run it again too.

Please let me know of what you think and of any upgrades I can make. I am sure I missed some obvious ones.

Thank you!
Philip
