Phil Writes About Cube: Black Cards in Shadows over Innistrad for Peasant Cube
With Shadows over Innistrad fully spoiled, I thought it would be a good time to look at the different cards that I might want to add to my Peasant Cube. For reference my cube can be found here: Cubetutor Link
Let's keep going with Black cards!
Gisa's Bidding
This card is comparable to Moan of the Unhallowed from the last time we were in Innistrad except the difference between Flashback and Madness. Flashback is probably better for being able to cast the card twice, but I think Madness had its place, too. The plan is to play this card along side Moan of the Unhallowed to see if it is possible for them to coexist. If they don't play well together, Gisa's Bidding will probably get cut.
Heir of Falkenrath / Heir to the Night
I like this lady as a discard outlet for Madness or Dredge cards, but she can only be used once for that purpose without tricks. The upside to that is that at times, you do not need to keep reusing the discard outlet in a singleton format like cube. I could see that being a problem in constructed where you want to cast an Arrogant Wurm for its Madness cost every turn but that just won't happen here. I am highly skeptical of this card, but I do want to test it out.
Kindly Stranger / Demon-Possessed Witch
This Kindly Stranger is another card I am highly skeptical of. The fact that you have to sink an additional 3 mana into her to transform and destroy target creature might make her unplayable. I like the idea of a reusable removal spell pending you have some creature graveyard recursion. She probably won't make it too long in the cube, but she did catch my eye on the spoiler sheet.
Pale Rider of Trostad
I think this card has some potential. I always think its funny when they sneak cards into the set that kind of have a downside if you play it in a deck outside of the set. With me pushing graveyard and discard interactions, this card should shine. Dropping this card on turn two and discarding a Basking Rootwalla or a Dredge spell feels pretty good to me. My hopes are that this card turns out to be as good as I think it can be.
Tooth Collector
Yet again a card that I question if it is good enough or not. Giving one of your opponent's creatures -1/-1 every turn could put your opponent in an awkward position. X/1's would be a higher investment, but at the same time I could see this not changing the battlefield at all. I want to test this guy out, but I have a feeling he might not make it in the long run.
Twins of Maurer Estate
What cards do you think will make it into cube from Shadows over Innistrad? Let me know and join me next time for more!
Thank you,
Philip
