MTG Pack: Dragons of Tarkir #3

Each time I open a pack, I want to write a little bit about each card to make sure that I think about each one individually as it relates to prismatic. When I'm done writing, I am going to add the non-rare or foil cards to my "Phil Plus Syd" prismatic deck. If you don't know what prismatic is or want to see what the decklist currently is, here is the link: By Card Type and By Card Color!

Hardened Berserker

One red and two generic for a 3/2 red human berserker.Whenever it attacks, the next spell you cast casts one generic less this turn. Three power for three is fine, and the reduced cost of a spell every turn he attacks is pretty good. It can help you cast multiple spells a turn faster than your opponent.

Territorial Roc

One white and one generic for a 1/3 flying white bird. This guy is pretty awesome in prismatic. Flying is huge and having three toughness is awesome, too. I would always hope to get this guy in a game.

Mystic Meditation

One blue and three generic for a blue sorcery. Draw three cards. Then discard two cards unless you discard a creature. Drawing cards is awesome, as you probably know. I could see this card being good if you can discard two lands or a creature you don't need. I am interested in seeing how good this card is.

Ainok Artillerist

One green and two generic for a 4/1 green hound archer that has reach as long as it has a +1/+1 counter on it. This artillerist isn't the best in the creature combat world of prismatic. Prismatic tends to have a small number of kill spells so creatures bash into each other a lot, and X/1's are not the best for that. If you can get a +1/+1 counter on him, he might be a threat.

Fate Forgotten

One white and two generic for a white instant that exile target artifact or enchantment. Normally, you want ways to get rid of artifacts and enchantments to be on creatures so you can still attack and block with them. Exiling won't do a whole lot since there isn't anything really to bring them back right now.

Flatten

One black and three generic for a black instant that gives target creature -4/-4 until end of turn. This card should be used carefully. There are not very many spells to kill creatures in my prismatic deck so any time you use one, it should be for a good reason. Hopefully, there is an awesome X/4 target to get with it.

Pacifism

One white and one generic for a white enchantment. Enchant creature and that creature can't attack or block. This is another very awesome "kill" spell. Even though the creature isn't dead, it is taken out of combat situation and math. There are not a whole lot of enchantment removal cards either, so it probably won't be going anywhere if it resolves.

Ancient Carp

One blue and four generic for a 2/5 blue fish. I really like the art on this card, but a 2/5 for five just isn't the best. He's probably fine in prismatic because it'll probably take two blocking creatures or a blocking creature and a spell to kill him. We'll see if if this fish surprises me.

Epic Confrontation

One green and one generic for a green sorcery. Target creature you control gets +1/+2 and fits a creature you don't control. Green removal is hard to come be normally, but in prismatic, it should prove to be a really useful tool if you draw it. As I said before, removal should be used sparingly.

Atarka Efreet

One red and three generic for a 5/1 red efreet shaman with Megamorph. When it's turned up, it does one damage to target creature or player. I really want to attack with this guy as a morphed creature, and then when/if he is unblocked, turn him face up and do six combat from Megamorph and one from the effect. The one toughness makes him a little less useful in prismatic, though. This creature should end up being average, I think.

Lurking Arynx

One green and four generic for a 3/5 green cat beast with Formidable for one green and two generic that makes target creature block him this turn. I guess this creature could kind of be removal, too. You can make a creature block him and kill an X/3 or lower. This kitty is not really exciting to me, though.

Qarsi Deceiver

One blue and one generic for a 0/4 blue naga wizard. You can tap this creature to add one generic to your mana pool to spend on casting a face-down spell, turn up a manifested creature, or turn up a morphed creature. The only format this creature is good in is a morph and manifest heavy format so as prismatic evolves and has less of them, he will lose even more value. This is not a good creature, in my opinion.

Death Wind

One black and X for a black instant. Target creature gets -X/-X until end of turn. This pack has been full of removal. This card isn't the best, but at the same time, I'd rather have it than nothing. It should be fine until a better spell can replace it.

Ojutai's Command

One blue, one white, and two generic for a blue and white instant. It has choose two of; return target creature card with converted mana cost two or less from your graveyard to the battlefield, you gain four life, counter target creature spell, or draw a card. This card would be really powerful, but I'm really excited to see it in my cube. Some people have said it is like a less powerful Cryptic Command.

Thank you,
Philip
