MTG Pack: Dragons of Tarkir #5
Each time I open a pack, I want to write a little bit about each card to make sure that I think about each one individually as it relates to prismatic. When I'm done writing, I am going to add the non-rare or foil cards to my "Phil Plus Syd" prismatic deck. If you don't know what prismatic is or want to see what the decklist currently is, here is the link: By Card Type and By Card Color!
Dutiful Attendant
One black and two generic for a 1/2 black human warrior that when he dies, return another target creature card from your graveyard to your hand. I'm not a fan of this creature. It is cool that you might get a good creature your opponent killed back, but you still have to cast this guy, have him die, and then cast the card you got back. I'm not sure how he'll play out in prismatic.
Impact Tremors
I wrote about it here: Dragons of Tarkir #2
Student of Ojutai
I wrote about it here: Dragons of Tarkir #2
Kolaghan Stormsinger
One red for a 1/1 red human shaman with haste and Megamorph for one red. When she is turned face up, target creature gains haste until end of turn. I like this creature in my mono red blitz type strategies. Prismatic, though, I'm unsure. If you get her on turn one, she could run away with the game if you opponent fails to cast anything on the first handful of turns, but late game, she doesn't do a whole lot except give someone haste.
Conifer Strider
One green and three generic for a 5/1 green elemental with hexproof. This creature will probably end up not being really great in prismatic since it is a creature combat heavy format. The X/1's are in a weird spot.
Anticipate
One blue and one generic for a blue instant. Look at the top three cards of your library. Put one in your hand, and put the rest at the bottom of your library in any order. Drawing cards is always good. Putting the cards at the bottom of your library is kind of irrelevant since you probably won't get that far down in the deck. This should be a find card.
Atarka Beastbreaker
One green and one generic for a 2/2 green human warrior with Formidable for one green and four generic. His Formidable gives him +4/+4 until the end of the turn. Two power for two is always fine, and his ability helps him a little. I don't see it being activated too much.
Mystic Meditation
I wrote about it here: Dragons of Tarkit #3
Taigam's Strike
One blue and three generic for a blue sorcery that gives target creature +2/+0 and can't be blocked until the end of turn with Rebound. This will be good to push damage through. It seems like this card will be good in a situation where you are ahead, but when you are behind this card will be terrible to draw.
Silumgar Butcher
One black and four generic for a 3/3 black zombie djinn with Exploit. When he exploits a creature, target creature gets -3/-3 until end of turn. In a pinch, this will be an ok removal spell. A 3/3 for five is not exactly the best, though. I imagine this card will be fine, but not the best card in prismatic.
Swift Warkite
One red, one black, and four generic for a 4/4 red and black dragon with flying. When it enters the battlefield, you may put a creature card with mana cost of three or less from your hand or graveyard onto the battlefield. That creature gains haste, and return it to your hand at the end of turn. I can't wait to cast this card. Getting a card back from your graveyard to refresh your hand will be useful in late games.
Rending Volley
One red for a red instant that can't be countered by spells or abilities, and it deal four damage to target white or blue creature. It seems like that card is too narrow, but a blow out when it hits the right target.
Scale Blessing
One white and three generic for a white instant that Bolsters one, then put a +1/+1 counter of each creature you control with a +1/+1 on it. So, at the least, it is a +2/+2 to your weakest creature. For that, it isn't the best, but if you have a few creatures that this will help out, then it should be awesome. It will be interesting to see how it turns out in prismatic.
Thank you,
Philip
